Quick Product Overview

Thule Motion 3 Cargo Box changes

If you’re familiar with the Thule Motion XT, you may be wondering what’s changed with the Thule Motion 3 Cargo Box —and whether those changes actually matter. The short answer: yes, they do. Thule has made a series of thoughtful refinements that improve aerodynamics, usability, and fitment without reinventing the wheel.

Let’s examine the changes at a glance.

A Redesigned Shape for Better Aerodynamics

The most important update to the Motion 3 is its new overall shape. Thule has significantly reduced the nose profile, bringing the front of the box closer to the windshield.

The goal here is simple—improved aerodynamic efficiency. By smoothing out airflow over the vehicle, you should see less wind resistance and, ideally, a smaller hit to fuel economy compared to the Motion XT. While roof boxes will always have some impact, this redesign aims to keep that impact as minimal as possible.

A Lower Side Profile for Easier Access

Another noticeable change is the reduced side profile of the Motion 3. In practical terms, this makes loading and unloading gear easier—especially if you’re reaching up from the ground or working with heavier items.

It’s a subtle update, but one that makes day-to-day use more convenient, particularly on taller vehicles.

Expanded Size Options—Including Low-Profile Models

Thule has also improved and expanded the sizing lineup for the Motion 3 series.

You’ll still find the standard-height options:

But now, Thule has added low-profile versions, including:

These low-profile boxes are similar in concept to what we’ve seen with the Alpine Series. They’re ideal for customers who have garage height restrictions, want a sleeker, lower roof setup, or primarily carry skis or slimmer gear.

In short, there’s now a Motion 3 for more vehicles—and more use cases—than ever before.

Same Trusted Colors, with a Slight Refresh

Color options remain familiar:

  • Black
  • Titanium Grey

That said, the grey has been updated and is now slightly darker than before, giving it a more refined, modern look.
