Hey, Tom here from Roof Racks Calgary. Today, we’re taking a closer look at the brand-new Thule Motion 3 Cargo Box, the latest evolution of one of Thule’s most popular cargo solutions.
The original Motion Cargo Box launched about six years ago, and with the Motion 3, Thule has built on that strong foundation. The result is a refined design with some smart new sizing options and a handful of feature upgrades that make an already great box even better.
One of the nicest updates with the Motion 3 is the expanded size lineup.
The Motion 3 is still available in the familiar standard sizes:
But Thule has now introduced a Low series, which includes:
“Low” refers to the overall height of the cargo box. These low-profile options are a great solution for customers with limited garage clearance. They’re also especially appealing for those who primarily carry skis, while still offering enough vertical space for smaller luggage and baggage.
The Motion 3 is available in two colour options:
Both finishes offer a clean, modern look that pairs well with just about any vehicle.
While many features carry over from the original Motion series, there are a few key changes that set the Motion 3 apart, starting with the overall shape of the box.
Thule has redesigned the front end with a sweeping, contoured profile that helps reduce drag, improve fuel economy, and give the box a cleaner appearance on the vehicle. The front of the box now sits closer to the windshield, improving both performance and aesthetics.
At the back of the box, Thule has shortened the overall length and added a full cutaway section behind the box. This accommodates roof-mounted radio antennas and shark-fin antennas while improving vehicle fitment.
The benefit here is simple, as you can often fit a larger box on your vehicle without interfering with trunk or hatch opening.
Another welcome update is the reduced height along the sides of the box. Compared to the original Motion, which had a taller side contour, the Motion 3 is easier to load, especially when lifting gear overhead.
The box still opens from both sides of the vehicle and uses Thule’s excellent Slide Lock mechanism, which automatically latches when you close the lid. No twisting or torquing the key required—just shut it and you’re good to go.
One of the more unique additions to the Motion 3 is the new lid protection system. Thule has added a wire cage inside the lid, allowing it to open and close more evenly from front to back.
This means less twisting, smoother operation, and no need for two hands to wrestle the lid open.
Thule is also expanding accessory options for the Motion series. With the Motion 3, you’ll be able to add:
These are optional add-ons, but they’re a nice touch for customers looking to dial in their setup.
The Motion 3 uses Thule’s PowerClick mounting hardware, making installation fast and straightforward. Getting the box on or off your vehicle can be done in under two minutes. No tools, no fuss.
Those are our initial impressions of the Thule Motion 3 Cargo Box. Overall, it feels like a very strong replacement for the original Motion: subtle improvements in features, a noticeably refined design, and the same quality build Thule is known for.
